The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was created to protect patients information from being unlawfully and unethically shared which extends to health plans, health care clearinghouses and to health care providers. The type of information that’s protected includes: the individual’s past, present or future physical or mental health information; the provision of health care to the individual; the past, present or future payment for the provision of health care to the patient. Any violation of this can result with a penalty as low as $50,000 and an annual maximum of $1.5 million.
