Our schools are filled with personnel from teachers to the school nurse who are exposed to the risk of bloodborne pathogens due to the occurrences of student’s blood and bodily fluids when administering first aid. Bloodborne pathogens are infectious materials found in human blood and fluids that can ultimately cause disease and, sometimes, death to those who come in contact. Teachers most at risk are those who work with special-education children as they are not only more prone to injury, but are dependent on others for care.
This micro-learning clip is designed to discuss what bloodborne pathogens are, how they affect teachers and nurses working with students, how to avoid exposure and what to do in the event of an exposure. Children will typically need an adult to administer care in the event of a womb, but protecting yourself from these pathogens needs to be taken into account.
